After completing our fifth winter of Derby Churches Nightshelter we can’t say thank you enough to all those who have volunteered and supported this project financially and in prayer. The success we’ve had in demonstrating God’s love and making a difference in the lives of homeless people in Derby has inspired others to take action.

Burton Nightshelter

Volunteer and former Night Staff member Jill Gossling has been part of a nightshelter in Burton last winter, using the DCM model as best practice, run by YMCA Burton. With a team of 130 volunteers and one venue, St Paul’s, Burton, they received 95 guests (17 women and 78 men) and were able to offer 24 guests YMCA accommodation when the shelter closed after Easter.

Mansfield Nightshelter

In addition, we were approached in October by Mansfield District Council and asked to take the lead in setting up a nightshelter in Mansfield. Chesterfield Road South Methodist Church was able to open for four nights a week between Christmas week and mid-March after the snow. With a small but dedicated team of 20 volunteers and 2 night staff, they welcomed 66 guests and 5 guests were able to be rehoused through the local Housing Options when the shelter closed.

Phil Morton is already in discussion with more churches in Mansfield and also in Chesterfield about opening their doors to shelter the homeless next winter.

“It’s great to be able to empower more Christians to get involved in serving their communities and making a difference”

If you are interested in helping with the nightshelters in Burton, Mansfield or Chesterfield, contact Phil Morton for further information.

Despite these additional nightshelters being open, we saw an increase of 22% in the number of guests staying in Derby Churches Nightshelter last winter (323), with almost a 24% increase in under 25's.
