At 21, Nikki found herself alone with a 2-year-old daughter. She had a house but also huge debts with her former partner. She had no childcare so couldn’t work. For 9 months she managed her debts, paying £600 per month for income support and tax credits, leaving £100 for bills and food. “Some days I just fed my daughter as I couldn’t afford to feed myself”. She brought her paperwork to the Jubilee clinic and Ruth contacted her creditors, renegotiated debts and even went with her to court. “The food parcels were such a blessing”… That was 10 years ago. Nikki is still in the same house, with two children, and now works supporting adults with mental health issues. She recently visited a clinic to bring a friend who needed advice.
