what is a street pastor?

Street Pastors are trained volunteers from local churches who are passionate about Jesus and passionate about their community. They put their faith into action by demonstrating Christ's love in a practical way on the streets of Derby on a Friday and Saturday night.

People enjoying a night out may at some point find themselves in a place of vulnerability or difficulty.  Street Pastors are a visible and reassuring presence for everyone on the streets - listening, caring, helping.  It is our aim that we leave someone in a better situation than when we first met them. A shift may involve helping someone sober up to ensure that they have safe transport home, reuniting people with friends, doing basic first aid for those who are injured, or simply chatting with people about their lives, hopes and fears

Over the years great relationships have been built as we have spent time with hundreds of people.  Here are just a few of the comments we have received in the last few months:

"Talking to you lot has been the best 15 minutes of our night out!"

" You know when you lot are around, the atmosphere feels different, you can feel it"

"I just want to say how amazing you all are. Your group stayed with my daughter and her friend and kept them warm and safe until I got there. Thank you so much for the kindness and help you gave. They were honestly the best group of people I have ever met.“  (Feedback from a parent)

"I was ready to go home at about 12am and three of your street pastors were so kind and helpful and gave me a pair of flip flops to help my feet. I don't think they know how much their work is appreciated. You really all are angels and I hope you realise how much you help people."

Street Pastor History

Street Pastors are a national organisation that started in Brixton in 2003 in response to inner city gun crime.  Since then it has grown so that there are now over 300 Street Pastor Initiatives across the UK the majority of which serve the people of the Night Time Economy in their city or town.

Street Pastors in Derby started in February 2009 and since that date we have provided a continuous presence on the streets of Derby on a Friday and Saturday night.  Over the intervening period we have trained over 130 Street Pastors and we currently have 49 volunteers who make up our current team.
