What is Safe Space?

In March 2019, Derby City Mission launched Safe Space, a haven dedicated to serving individuals grappling with the profound challenges of homelessness. Far beyond shelter, Safe Space is a sanctuary of hope, a testament to our commitment to fostering positive change.

Guided by Partnership

Our mission is fortified by a robust collaboration with the Derbyshire Police & Crime Commissioner and Derby Homes. Together, we navigate the complex terrain of homelessness, working tirelessly to effect meaningful transformation in the lives of those most in need.

A Sanctuary for Respite

Safe Space is a lifeline, offering a respite for up to 12 guests during the day, where they receive vital support. By night, it transforms into a secure and temporary residence, accommodating up to 11 individuals, shielding them from the perils of street life.

A Compassionate and Specialist Home For The Night

Within Safe Space, individuals find solace and essential amenities, including:

  • Immaculate shower facilities tailored for the differently-abled.
  • Access to clean and refreshed clothing through our laundry services.
  • Nutritious meals, expertly prepared to alleviate hunger.
  • A nurturing environment for meaningful conversations.
  • An on-site paramedic.
  • Compassionate ears and a refuge for emotional support.
  • Entertainment via television.

Ever-evolving

Since launching Safe Space, we have moved to a new facility which has been converted into a specialist self-contained unit that includes:

  • Specialised sleeping pods
  • Toilet and showers with disabled facilities
  • Medical room
  • Reception area, staff office and interview room
  • Kitchenette and refreshment area
  • Rest and recovery area
  • New enclosed entrance and access ramp
  • Entry control and security system

The new facility opened to guests in June 2020 - Take a look at Safe Space's origins here.

And you can read more about the journey to completion and how we developed the new Safe Space facility here: Safe Space Development

Charting a Path to Restoration

Our committed team at Safe Space goes beyond providing shelter; they serve as guides, facilitating our guests' journey toward regaining stability and self-sufficiency.

How Can You Support Safe Space?

If you're moved by our mission, we invite you to make a financial contribution.

Your support holds immeasurable value, both for us and for the individuals we serve. Together, we stand as architects of hope, forging a brighter, more compassionate future.
