Application Criteria

To become a Street Pastor you must be able to satisfy the following criteria that are set in conjunction with the Ascension Trust.

  • You are a Christian
  • You have been in church membership for over 1 year
  • You attend a local church regularly and are committed to serving it and are submitted to its leadership
  • You are fully supported in prayer and supervision by your sponsoring church. Your church leader must endorse your application
  • You are over 18 years old at time of application.
  • You commit to attend all training sessions and to follow all Ascension trust good practice guidelines.
  • You complete a DBS check.
  • You commit to a minimum of 12 shifts per annum
  • You contribute £50 to the project annually to cover uniform and training costs.
  • The sponsoring church makes a donation of £100 per street pastor per annum.

In addition:

  • You are available to work either Fridays or Saturdays.
  • The hours of the shifts are 21.30 hrs to 04.00hrs
  • You do not exceed 3 shifts per month.
  • You commit to serving for a minimum of 2 years as a Street Pastor
  • You do not smoke, drink, swear or use offensive language on duty or whilst wearing authorised Street Pastor uniforms.
  •  Racist, sexist, sectarian or homophobic behaviour will not be tolerated. The foundation of Street Pastors is unconditional love of all, no matter what people’s background or orientation.

Application Process

Recuritment starts during January each year with 'Taster Evenings' occuring during February for you to hear more about Street Pastors.  During this period, you are invited you to do an 'Observer Shift' with interviews occuring soon after for successful applicants.


Upon recruitment you will be inivited to attend a series of comprehensive training sessions to help prepare you for your new role.  Modules include:

  • Knowing Your Community
  • First Aid
  • Drugs & Alcohol
  • Roles & Responsibilities
  • Gospel & Street Pastors
  • Safeguarding / Mental Health / Listening Skills
  • Homelessness / Police / CCTV

Final Step

Once you have completed training, you will be licenced by the Ascension Trust to be a Street Pastor and on completion, you will be required to undertake two supervised shifts prior to being commissioned as a fully fledged Street Pastor.
